Mission statement?

So I guess to start off this project I should at least try and define what is going on here for the potential readers, future contributors, and myself so I don’t lose focus.

As a consumer of a wide diaspora of media, I have come to the belief that a better understanding of popular culture, whether it is consumed by the masses or by a few scattered basement folk, can allow us to better understand the real world around us.

Hmmm, sounds sillier typing it out than in my head.

Well, the real idea is that conversations about themes, tropes, roles, etc. is what spurs me on to consume more things, and I just want to be able to do continue doing this with the intelligent folks that I could have long converstations with in person in the past few years.

At least this is where this project is going to start, since I’ll admit I have no real defined goals as of yet. I’ll be aiming for posts that are less about news and current events than the context they fit in, less about specific albums and episodes than the themes they represent and reinforce, less about my likes and dislikes than what it means for me to like or dislike something. I hope that whatever results is interesting, so I guess we’ll see what happens.
